The 170-foot Union Express was sunk in 1992 to foster the formation of an artificial reef. This site was originally named the Mariner Outboard/Pompano Rodeo Artificial Reef, and is located 1.5 miles due east of the Pompano Pier. The Union Express was confiscated by the US customs because she was found carrying drugs. This ship was a Dutch coastal freighter, which now sits upright in 110 feet of water on a sandy patch. Her broken hull provides protection to many large fish as well as breeding spotfish, amberjacks, and tarpon. She also has a resident grouper. Spear fisherman find this to be a great site. Divers should be forewarned that the current could be very strong.
