The Hyde served as a dredge with the US Army Corps of Engineers in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War. In May of 1988, the 215-foot Hyde was deployed by the NC Department of Marine Fisheries in AR-386 located about 15 miles off Wrightsville Beach. AR-386 is known as the Lennon/Hyde Reef. near to the Hyde is another USACOE dredge, the Markham, and the Alton Lennon (aka The Schoolhouse Barge). Ten box cars are also within the reef.

The current is usually easy on the Hyde and visibility good. Many parts of the wreck are penetratable and the wreck is swarming with fish. Divers report seeing large numbers of tropicals, grouper, amberjack, and mackerel as well as rays, eels, barracudas, and sand tiger and nurse sharks.
