This is one of the most alive and magnificent artificial reefs in the Jacksonville area. A ten-foot ledge dominates the reef providing protection for marine creatures and anchoring the soft corals and sponges. The namesake amberjack are normally seen swimming through the area in large schools. Trigger fish and French grunts are a common sight as well.
There are several small reefs in the area along with a barge. A 40-foot tug, Monahan, was added to the area in 1995 and is surrounded by rubble from the Julington Creek Bridge. Depths range from 75 to 85 feet and visibility is generally around 40 feet.
