Best First Dive!!!!
I was there for 4th of July weekend. Rented a boat, and went out to snorkel 1st day..great reef. second day went back to do my first dive ever. Very easy place to learn, 40ft + visability, lots to see, Big Grouper, Green Moray Eels, tons of reef fish and color on the reef. Did 1st swim through Fire Coral Cave (south end)- simply amazing. also dove Eagle Ray Ravine - (north end of reef). Used Sea Dwellers dive shop, Great outfit and our intsructor Jerry was Top Notch. Definelty recommend this dive and Sea Dwellers dive shop.

Lots of fish
The reef was a bit muted in terms of color, but the amount of sea life was pretty impressive. We saw numerous fish, including some 5-6ft barracuda near the reef tower. The number of barracuda (30+) was a little unnerving, but it was my first encounter with them. Also saw a couple sharks, jellies, and a sea turtle. No waves and depths ranged from 4-25 feet in places. We went mid-week in March and there was only a handful of other divers there. I thought it was a good spot in my limited experience. Oh and this is a spot you can snorkel with good success.

I dove 2 sites on this reef. Wench and Fire Coral. Both were good. I was able to see a good size sea turtle and a green moray eel.
Visibility was around 40'. Water temp: 79F

Amazing first dive boat dive!
My husband and I recently got certified only last month so we are anxious to get in dives. We dove this site this past weekend and this was our first real dive boat dive--it was spectacular! We were a little bummed that the weather was pouring rain and windy but once we got under it was absolutely beautiful... We saw, among which seemed like thousands of fish, many barracuda, giant sea turtles, several huge spotted eagle rays and a huge sting ray sitting on the bottom. At times we sat on the sand bottom and watched everything go by like an amazing video... We will definately go back to Molasses and the surrounding sites soon!

Lots to see, lot of time to see it
I've dove this reef for four years, and seen the wide range it has to offer. Just like almost anywhere some days you'll see much more than others. The coral is nice, macro critters are everywhere, and large fish and rays can be seen very often. It's so shallow you dont have to worry much about decompression, and the air lasts forever. Take your time and look in every crevice.

Lots of Fish, but disappointed
Over the past two days we made 4 dives along Molasses Reef. I must say, I was disappointed. After reading the reviews here and alsewhere, I was very exited and awaiting an incredible experience. It's a great site for novice divers, but if you're a well traveled diver, you will get bored after the first dive. The corals are not very spectacular, but the abundance and variety of fish is amazing, which is why I gave 3 stars instead of 2.

Just as good as the best Hawaii shallow reefs.
The day I was there vis was excellent, almost 100' and the wildlife is amazing. The fish were hanging around the boat as soon as we moored and seemed to be waiting on us to enter the water. They are not afraid of people at all. Large Snook, snapper, yellowtail, grouper, morays, etc are all there in abundance. This is a great family dive you can take the kids to.
One word of advice though, check the tide charts as the current can be famously brutal.
Forget the 3 star rating above, he seems to look down his nose at a shallow dive like this. A dive doesn't have to be deep enough to use nitrox to be a great dive.
The nice thing about dives like this is you see all the vibrant colors.

SPA works
Molasses is one of the best reef's in the keys. Since the SPA has gone into effect I have seen the fish come back to the reef in numbers and sizes that match the first time I was on the reef over 15 years ago.
This trip I saw numerous lobster, a 20-25lb Black Grouper, A Nassau Grouper, a Gag Grouper, and a large Red Snapper.
Because of the frequency of visitors these fish had little concern with divers and would let you approach to within a few feet.
This is one of my favorite dives....
